Why Nokumbaya? What does it mean?

We are faith-based charitable organization. We believe we should serve by working for others, not just singing around the campfire.

Can I help even if I do not have any medical training?

Yes, we need volunteers to do many things: registration, height and weight, vision, lice shampoos. We will train you. All we ask is that you are willing to whatever is needed. Come with a “servant’s heart.”

Where do we stay?

There are several options depending on your need for comfort and affordability, ranging from sleeping on an air mattress on the floor (no charge) to staying at various guest houses or resorts that will give discounts to mission volunteers.

What is the cost?

Each team member is expected to pay their own way. Many volunteers raise their funds through their churches, civic organizations, or family and friends. Your cost is the cost of your airfare and lodging (see “where do we stay” above). We will feed you on work days, but you will be responsible for your own meals on your days off.

What are the physical requirements?

Each team member is expected to carry 40 pounds of supplies in their checked luggage and use their carry-on luggage for their personal needs. You are expected to be able to carry your suitcase of supplies for your assigned station each day of the mission.

Watch your back — We travel over rough unpaved roads in vehicles with little suspension. Also, the vehicles may or may not have air-conditioning.

We work in the tropics. It is hot and humid. There is no AC in the buildings we work in. Sometime we work outside. Ask yourself if you can take the heat.

What about bugs?

There are lots of them! Bring your bug spray and use it often.

What about immunizations?

We recommend you get a tetanus booster, hepatitis series, and yellow fever vaccine. Also talk to your doctor about malaria prevention medication. We are working in the jungle and malaria is a risk. Discuss the pros and cons of taking malaria prevention medication with your physician.

What are the spiritual requirements

We are a faith-based Christian organization and we believe that we called to serve. Our work is our worship. Also we meet each morning as a team with our local teammates to share devotions together. All volunteers are welcome to be part of our mission regardless of their faith, but we do ask that if you do not want to participate in the daily devotion, that you at least attend and be respectful, because we are a team.

We recommend that each team member serve in the prayer station as they are able. It is not required.

Prayer is offered to each patient, but no one is required to participate.
